LAST DAY OF CLASSES!
Its official today is the LAST DAY OF CLASSES for the University of Dayton! This long awaited day has finally come and it is somewhat bittersweet. Ya, we are done with classes for our freshman year in college, but now we have finals. Some people got lucky and only have to take 1 final and write a paper, others, not so much, 4 finals is a lot. Some people have to take more, that is unfortunate. All of our hard work has finally come to an end and next stop, home!

Sororities a definition of 'sisterhood'
Sororities are the definition of 'sisterhood'. Being in a sorority adds a special bond to you along with the girls in your sorority. Although summer is approaching too quickly, your 'sisters' will always be there. Even though they might be in different states, we all have something in common, our sorority. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you are doing, you can always pick up the phone and call one of your sisters; especially if you are in trouble or just want to talk. This is what makes a sorority so special. I am proud and excited that I was chosen to be in the sorority I am, Zeta Tau Alpha.

Spike For Charity
What is it?
Spike for charity is an all day volleyball tournament on Saturday April 19th. The entry fee is 15 dollars per person. This includes a t-shirt and headband. The money is given to a charity organization that is dedicated to helping those with cerebral palsy.
History?
This is the second annual tournament. Last year there were only 15 teams that participated and this year it is over 20! This opportunity is open to all those in a professional fraternity and all the proceeds are given to a great cause.
Times and Places?
The first games kick off at 9 a.m. this Saturday morning! You can find these games going on all across campus! Anywhere there is a sand volleyball court there will be teams playing on it!
I recommend all of you come out and support this event, even if it means that you just watch others play. Hopefully the weather will be nice enough to play and maybe even get a little tan!

Stander 08
I was also impressed with the presentation done by Kelly McNichols and Patricia M. Hart, titled, "Standardized Tests: Helping or Hurting?" This presentation caught my attention due to the fact that we have been talking about standardized testing in my education class. The purpose if this study was to present recent research on standarized testing in the school system. These girls presented their audience with many facts such as the postive benefits and disadvantges of standardized testing, and a short talk on the No Child Left Behind. I found this presentation to be very intresting and packed full of helpful facts.
Stander 08' was very intresting, it was packed full of so many topics and you could see by just walking around and observing that each person there had done such a great amount of research on their topic and were ready to help and answer any questions.

Stander Day...
Wednesday, I attended two events offered. The first event regarded the Peace Corps with a prominent speaker, Dr. Jody Olsen, Deputy Director of the Peace Corps. Waking up to go listen to a speech at 9 o'clock in the morning wasn't my idea of an ideal day. My views changed once Dr. Olsen began speaking, she did a fabulous job and I got a real feel for what the Peace Corps was all about. She talked for about 45 minutes and did an excellent job of explaining what was all involved in the Peace Corps. She answered questions anyone had and was thorough. I then attended the poster event in the KU Ballroom. It was interesting to see all the different projects and how I could relate to some of them. It must have taken a lot of time, effort and preparation for those projects; I think they did an excellent job.

Poster Session 2
Stander Symposium
The second presentation I attended was called "Student Research on Literacy and Its Influences." Again, there were four presenters. I liked Christine Jasek's presentation about Grammar and Literacy. Christine is a marketing major. She wanted to know if college students used good grammar and whether or not that leads to good written communication. She had fourteen first-year students take a grammar quiz, and she asked what their last grade on a paper was. I actually took the quiz, and parts of it were pretty difficult. The average quiz score was a 73%, but the average grade on the paper was an A-. The section with the lowest scores was that of parallel structure, and the section in which students did best on was fragments. So, good grammar does not equal good written communication. She found different reasons for poor grammar. We write how we speak, which hurts written communication. People do not correct others when they speak wrong. I thought this presentation was very interesting, especially for my future profession as a teacher. I need to make sure that my students really understand grammar, and grammar should be taught in context. I will implement it in all subjects, not just when we study grammar.

Did you know?
I didn't know that. Here is a little insight to all the fraternities and sororities available and UD; UD also has fraternities and sororities specifically for business students, engineering majors, and even law students. The fraternities on campus are: Alpha Nu Omega, Alpha Phi Alpha, Beta Theta Pi,Delta Tau Delta, Epsilon Delta Tau, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Sigma Phi Epsilon. The sororities on campus include: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Sigma Pho, Pi Beta Phi, Theta Phi Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, and finally Zeta Tau Alpha. This variety helps students to figure out which fraternity or sorority they belong in!!
Better Late then Never...
For many sororities around the University of Dayton, Big/Little week is over, unfortunately. Big/Little week is one of the best weeks as a pledge. Throughout the week, your 'big' who's identity is unknown to you, brings presents to your room and decorates it. This goes on for a week and is a ton of fun; your presents could be anything from movies to blankets to flip flops. At the end of the week you find out who your 'big' is, that is one of the most exciting parts of the whole week!! A week of presents and baked goods, who wouldn't want that?

Video Games, Boys Reading, and Parental Involvement
Jason, Palmer, Kathryn, and Sara proud of their research panel. Jason discovered that there is no difference in reading attitudes and practices between students who play a lot of video games and those who don't. Palmer learned that young men's attitudes toward reading seem to improve over time. Kathryn and Sara learned just how important parental involvement is to literacy, and how important it is for children to watch their parents read.
I particularly love Palmer's title:
Sports and Literacy
Songwriting, Visual Learning, and Music's Effects on Reading
Inclusion, Impromptu Writing, Workplace Writing, and ADD
Amanda, Mike, Krista, and Elizabeth after their successful research presentations:
Is inclusion a good idea? (in moderation)
Are timed impromptu writing tests a good idea? (not really)
Are SBA students ready to write in the workplace (no, but they think they are)
Is the transition to college hard for students with ADD? (yes, but especially in large classes).
As a bonus: Mike's take on timed writing:

Barrack Obama and I ... We're pretty much friends now...
After this strange rush of mixed emotions subsided... i realized that i still didn't get my handshake... so as the speech went on i slowly manuevered myself into position against the metal gate like barricade, and after standing on my feet for hours, my strategy paid off. As Barrack made his way towards the exit, shaking hands, I was able to reach out and shake history's hand. But Ohhh it does not stop there... as the crowd around me pressed in, the lady next to me began to fall backwards into the crowd. Barrack let out a "woah woah!!!" and proceeded to reach into the crowd and extended a helping hand to the helpless lady. I quickly caught on to the situation and the opportunity that presented itself. I reached down, one hand on the lady, one on Barrack, and i helped bring her back to her feet. He gave the lady a hug and then dissapeared into the exit. This is when I had a realization... I just helped the (potentially) next president of the United States... we technically just worked together to accomplish something. Yah I'll admit it... I felt like a badass... I probably should have slipped him my card and let him know that if he needed a running mate he could always give me a call... but i guess i could always wait till the next election...

Rush is FINALLY over!
After the long awaited process of rush for sororities, it’s finally over! The week of rush was a long one, waiting to see if you got called back to the sorority you wanted, having to choose which one you liked best, and attending parties. It was a long week but totally worth it. Getting dressed up on school nights and talking and meeting new girls was very exciting, one of the highlights of the process was getting to know each sorority, which completely alters your decision. Now that rush is over, weeks are full of new member meetings and socials. Currently it is Big/Little week, one of the best weeks!! More to come about that later!

Eli Manning is probably related to Zues
In a country where colonists claimed independence by coming together to beat 80,000 much better trained troops from the most powerful country in the world, Eli Manning is a National Hero. The Statue of Liberty calls for countries poor and rejected... not for thier rich and wealthy, and Eli Manning fits this mold much better than Tom Brady (Girls who dont even know what a touchdown is can tell me who Tom Brady is...) He reflects the attitude and principles of our founding fathers... teamwork, leadership, and above all ... RESILIENCE. He was butchered by the media and took it like a man. He was able to say "No San Diego... I don't want to be drafted by you. I'd rather go to New York." He knows what he wants and goes out and gets it. Forget a Chuck Norris drop kick... an Eli Manning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress was used to take down Evil this time. I don't understand why we dont just send Eli Manning the the Middle East... no doubt Osama would come out of his cave waving a white flag.
You know... Forget National Hero... Eli Manning should be the 113th Man Law... Thats right... Just "Man Law 113: Eli Manning"... 'nuff said

Dayton Continues its Decline
Even though the Flyers have lost 5 of the last 7 games, they are currently projected as a 12th seed in the Big Dance. But if their struggles continue, they might be playing their postseason in the NIT rather than the Big Dance.
